Sole Collector · The Founder

Every community has the person who decided it should exist in the first place. For us, that was Steve Mulholland. Before there was a magazine on the shelf or a line wrapped around a Niketown, there was Steve, betting that the people who cared this much about sneakers deserved something made for them.

The magazine, the events, the whole world that grew up around Sole Collector started as his idea and his work. It is easy to forget, years later, how unlikely all of it was. Print was expensive, the audience was scattered across message boards and away messages, and nobody had proven you could build something real around sneaker culture. Steve did it anyway.

If you ever flipped through an issue and felt like it was made by people who actually got it, that feeling started with him. What do you remember about the early days of the magazine, and when did you first realize Sole Collector was something different?
